Humanism emphasised the study of Latin rhetoric and a return to the classical sources for the education of the elites. The Protestants rebelled against Catholicism and started a new interpretation of The Bible. The Catholic counter-reformation emphasised a return to the spiritual roots of the monastic orders and a personal relationship with Christ. It also instituted the inquisition. Politically, the conventions of diplomacy were established, the rulers of the Italian city-states consolidated their power and used art for the display of their status and power. The kings of Spain and France and Henry the VIII in England established absolute rule. In arts there was the development of linear perspective and the rendering of a more natural reality in painting. In science there was an increased reliance on observation and experiments.
