Many social rules have changed over the past few decades. However, in the event of a death of a funeral, it is always a kind gesture for a note of condolence.

If your relationship with the ex-father-in law was close, despite the fact you're divorced, and even possibly the dynamic between yourself and your partner remains slightly strained, taking the upper-road and writing a brief note of your sympathies, plus adding some small brief fond memory you may have of the individual, is always welcomed.

If the relationship with the ex-father-in-law or mother-in-law was practically non-existent, simply acknowledging your ex's loss, again, is a polite gesture.

A caveat: if at any chance, the motivation is towards the hope of renewing a relationship with an ex, then a family member's death is a wholly inappropriate way to advance your cause.

Finally, it's always advisable to steer clear of contrite and grossly overused closing salutations such as: 'You are in my thoughts and prayers.'

A simple, 'sincerely,' or 'respectfully,' are far more appropriate closings and would appear far more sincere.
