There is considerable speculation that Europeans were fishing on the Grand Banks as far back as the late 1400s. It is very likely that they were also engaged in small scale trading with the First Nations, European goods for North American furs. Jacques Cartier reported that, on his voyage of 1534, his ships were waived into shore by First Nations people who wanted to trade their furs for European utensils and such. Indeed, by having such trading goods on board his ship, Cartier must have known about the potential for such trade. It would not be accurate, however, to say that a significant "fur trade" had been "developed" by 1600. Although a trade took place almost annually at Tadoussac, at the mouth of the Saguenay River, by 1600 it was still on a relatively small scale. After all, Quebec was not even founded by Champlain until 1608.
The Ming government was not impressed by the Portuguese. The Chinese thought the Europeans were barbarians or uncivilized people. The Chinese refused to trade with the Portuguese, but by 1600, they had allowed Portugal to set up a trading post at the port of Macao.
