Like the Danes, they were a nation rather than a tribe, but the next invasion was by the Normans from North West France. This was, of course the Norman Invasion in 1066 and one of the reasons it was successful was that the defending King Harold had dealt with a Danish invasion shortly before The Battle of Hastings so his troops were tired and demoralised. Initially, following the Roman withdrawal in c.410AD, Britain was invaded by the Picts from northern Scotland and the Irish from Ireland. The Picts reputedly rampaged across northern Britain and the Irish established colonies in western Wales and other places along the western coastline. The Britons invited the Jutes to come and help them against the Irish and Picts in return for money in c.449AD. However, once paid the Jutes refused to leave and encouraged other Germanic tribes - like the Angles and Saxons - to come to Britain to seek their fortune and take lands. This they did with great enthusiasm eventually creating England.

There were Germanic groups, the Vandals, Sueves, and Alemanni, and a Persian-speaking group the Alans. The Burgundians also settled in the empire, though technically not through an outright invasion. In Britain there were waves of migration by the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians, all of which were Germanic.
