∙ 8y agoThe term of "total success" is sometimes difficult to define. Using the thinking of US Civil War historians, a total success in a battle meant that one side inflicted massive and overwhelming damage to the opposing force. The Battle of Antietam in 1862 has been defined as a Union victory. The reason being that the Robert E. Lee led Army of Northern Virginia was forced to retreat from Maryland by the George B. McClellan led Army of the Potomac.Casualties were immense on both sides, however, the fact that Lee's army escaped and returned to fight another day, dampened the term of total success.
Unlike battles from the past, whether, for example Napoleonic battles or Hannibal battles, total success was the annihilation of opposing armies. Perhaps the best know of such a battle was in the Punic Wars. Clearly Hannibal's victory at Cannae over the Roman legions sent against him resulted in the total destruction of the Roman force.
These types of battles were virtually impossible in the US Civil War due to the mobility of the losing force. Their ability to escape after a battlefield loss was common to most victories by either side. Speed and mobility saved the day in the Civil War.
In this discussion, a siege, is not considered a battle.
With all the above said, two Confederate victories have been cited by military historians as battles of total success. These armchair generals cite the ratio of losses placed upon their opponents as the best measure and definition of total success.
This brings us to Cold Harbor and Kennesaw Mountain. In these two Confederate victories, the Union's losses were five to one compared to the Confederates losses.

∙ 11y agoNearly all the battles were on Confederate territory. The two most significant ones happened at the same time - Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Both Union victories.

Bad enough for sure, but not as great as a defender victory as the previously mentioned 5 to 1 battles.
