They used specially modified versions of the North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber. Each bomber had a five-crew instead of six, and no tail gun to save weight. A broomstick painted black was substituted so that Japanese fighters would think the bombers were armed with tail guns. All unnecessary weight was stripped to allow for more fuel and longer range. This bomber was named after General Billy Mitchell who demonstrated after World War 1 that bombers could sink ships, and the US Army court-martialed him for it. B-25B

The Doolittle raid.
No, he plays the character, Col. Doolittle, that led the "Doolittle Raid" on Japan in April 1942 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The "Doolittle Raid" was undertaken by B-25 medium bombers & crew that took off from the US Aircraft Carrier, USS Hornet. Doolittle survived WW2 as a General.
The Doolittle raid was meant to show the Japanese that they weren't invulnerable and to encourage the US people after a series of defeats in the S. Pacific. It also had the Japanese guessing as to from where we could launch such an attack.
The Attack came from a Japanese attack force of Aircraft carriers that sent in Aircraft fighters and dive bombers.
No, it was not a suicide mission, but it was a surprise attack. The Japanese launched aircraft from six Aircraft Carriers, the planes that survived the attack returned to their carriers. The Japanese only lost 29 aircraft, 4 midget submarines and only had 65 soldiers killed or wounded in the attack. This was out of a total of 353 Japanese aircraft invoved in the attack. The attack on Pearl Harbor was December 7th 1941, and Kamakaze pilots were not used until 1944.
The first attack on mainland Japan in WWII was the Doolittle raid by B-25 aircraft launched from the USS Enterprise on 18 April 1942.
Japan was not immune to attack....................
The Doolittle raid.
There was only one Doolittle Raid. Col. Doolittle was selected to lead a flight of medium bombers to attack mainland of Japan. The B-25 light bombers were modified so they could launch from the deck of a US Navy aircraft carrier. This attack was meant to strike at Japan in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor and was intended to bolster the morale of the US troops. The raid was almost sure to fail as the bombers could not return to the ship and could not even land on the ship. They were to continue flying to China and hope that they would land in territory held by the Nationalist Chinese. Some crews did survive. Some were killed when their planes crashed in the ocean. Others were captured by the Japanese and executed.
The raid had shown to the Japanese the vulnerability of Japan to aerial attack .

Generally speaking, yes. The US mainland had many more forces than the Japanese could easily attack. Additionally, the aircraft carriers would have had to come suspiciously close to the USA before launching the fighters, which would have prevented the element of surprise.
The nearest attack by Japan on US mainland took place in Oregon state forest. This took place in 1942 and was the only attack on the mainland.
Doolittle was the leader who lead the first air attack on the japan mainland using B 25 mittchels
