The way that diesel engines produce and use power is totally different to the way petrol engines produce power, the diesels power is at the bottom of the rev range as opposed to the petrol engines being at the top of the rev range. Becuse of this diesel engine gearboxes use very long gear ratios and petrol engine gearboxes use very short ratios. If you put a diesel engine onto a petrol gearbox the effect would be that in fifth gear at max revs you'll be travelling at 40mph.
