According to the CIA World Factbook the United States of America's government type is a Constitution-based federal republic with a strong democratic tradition.
Broken down further...
Constitution-based: The Constitution of the United States of America acts as the highest and supreme law of the Union.
Federal : The separate states are united by a central (federal) government.
Republic: A form of government where the head of state or of the executive is not a monarch. The people also have a direct involvement in the government through elections and voting.
Ultimately this means that the States (originally 13, now numbering 50) are each independent sovereign entities that are part of a union or federation. The states representation (the way that government is organized and carried out) in that union is based upon a republican form of government. The federal government (not to be confused with a national government) is bound and limited by the Constitution, which details what powers the federal government is to have, leaving all other issues to the States or to the people.
The following is what the founding fathers wrote in the US Constitution and believed:
Article IV Section 4
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.
Thomas Jefferson said, "A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."
Thomas Jefferson, March 11, 1790: "The republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind."
Alexander Hamilton, in debate, said: "Real liberty is neither found in despotism or the extremes of democracy, but in moderate government."
Alexander Hamilton, in Senate: "It has been observed that a pure democracy, if it were practicable, would be the most perfect government. Experience has proved that no position is more false than this. The ancient democracies, in which the people themselves deliberated, never possessed one feature of good government. Their very character was tyranny: their figure deformity."
John Adams, in a letter to John Taylor, wrote: "Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide."
James Madison said: "...democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security, or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths."
A democratic republic in which voters elect representatives to the bicameral legislative branch which do the every day bidding of government. There are 100 Senators and 435 members of the House of Representatives. The voters can also vote for but not necessarily elect the executive branch - the President and Vice President, who are actually elected by the electoral college. The President can appoint Supreme Court Justices and Judges to other lower Federal Courts. Supreme Court Justices receive a lifetime appointment.
The United States is a PRESIDENTIAL REPUBLIC which is a form of INDIRECT DEMOCRACY. Presidential Republics, which include the United States and large parts of Latin America, are governments where all citizens over a certain age can vote for political parties that sit in Congress as well as voting for a President who is the chief executive. In Presidential Republics, there is a clear delineation between the legislative and executive branches.
