Go on Google.com Type in: The history of WW2 aircraft. *Note: If you are American put in: The history of WW2 American Aircraft (vice-versa if you are Canadian.) All records for U.S. servicemen during WWII are kept by the National Archives and Records Administration. You'll have to contact them in writing to request information on your grandfather. Try the bureau of veterans affairs.
First you have to narrow your category of WWII aircraft:
1. Bombers: B-17 Flying Fortress; B-24 Liberators; B-25 Mitchells; B-26 Marauders; B-29 Super Fortress.
2. Torpedo Bombers: Devastators; Kates; Avengers.
3. Dive Bombers: Val; Vindicators; Dauntless.
4. Fighters: Warhawks; Lightnings; Wildcats; Hellcats; Zeros.
After identifying your specialty; then proceed to gather information about them. In each one of those categories there are well over a dozen different aircraft.
