According to service bulletins, Volkswagen recommends the use of Synthetic oil.
The Synthetic oil you choose must meet the VW 505.00 specification to be suitable for use with this engine.
There are a number of them out there just be sure to READ the label.
Oils which are suitable are but aren't limited to:
Amsoil European Engine Oil, 5W-40
Amsoil Series 3000, 5W-30
Amsoil High Performance, 10W-40
Amsoil semi-synthetic 15W-40
Mobil Delvac 1, 5W-40
Chevron Delo 400, 5W-40 (the full synthetic version)
Shell Rotella T
Redline, synthetic version (The one meant for diesel engines, with the CG-4 or CH-4 rating)
Hope This Helps.
The 505 oil requirement really depends on what year the engine is. I maintained a 98 Beetle with the same 2.0 as your Jetta. At first I used a 10w40 from 35000 miles to about 65000 miles. Never had one issue with it. Then I switched to Rotella Synthetic 5w40 and used that until it was totaled at 83000 miles. I had no trouble from the Rotella either. This engine does like a thicker oil, (5w40, 10w40 or 15w40) just be sure that the oil meets the cold temp needs for your area.

It is important to use the right type of oil in a car to help it run at its best. The PT cruiser vehicles are known to use 5w-20 engine oil.
