South Dakota can generally be divided into three geographic regions: eastern South Dakota, western South Dakota, and the Black Hills.

Smaller sub-regions in the state include the Coteau des Prairies, Coteau du Missouri, James River Valley, the Dissected Till Plains, and the Badlands.

Eastern South Dakota can be described as having a low elevation and a wetter climate than the rest of the state. The Coteau des Prairies, the Coteau du Missouri, the Dissected Till Plains, and the James River Valley are sub-regions located in Eastern South Dakota.

The Missouri River divides Eastern South Dakota (also known as "East River") from Western South Dakota (also known as "West River").

Western South Dakota is more rugged and consists of rolling hills, plains, ravines, and steep flat-topped hills called buttes. Most of Western South Dakota is part of the Great Plains Region. The Badlands is a sub-region located in Western South Dakota.

The Black Hills are in western South Dakota and extend into Wyoming. The Black Hills are a range of low mountains. Harney Peak, the highest point in the Black Hills is also the highest point in the US east of the Rocky Mountains. The Black Hills are rich in minerals such as gold, silver, copper, and lead.
