There have been 14 Vice Presidents who have gone on to serve as President.
Only one was elected to the Presidency succeeding someone other than the President he served with.
Richard Nixon (Vice President under Eisenhower 1953-1960) elected President in 1968 & re elected 1972).
Four were elected to the Presidency while still serving as Vice President
1. John Adams (1789-1797) was elected President in 1796.
2. Thomas Jefferson (1797-1801) was elected President in 1800.
3. Martin Van Buren (1833-1837) was elected President in 1836.
4. George H. W. Bush (1981-1989) was elected President in 1988.
Nine succeeded following the death of the President in office.
1. John Tyler became President when William Henry Harrison died. Initially sought re-election in 1844 as the nominee of the "National Democratic Tyler Convention" but withdrew before the election.
2. Millard Fillmore became President when Zachary Taylor died. Sought the Whig nomination in 1852, but lost to Winfield Scott. Four years later, ran and lost as the candidate of the American and Whig Parties.
3. Andrew Johnson became President when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Sought the Democratic nomination in 1868, but was unsuccessful.
4. Chester A. Arthur became President when James Garfield was assassinated. Sought a full term, but was not re-nominated.
5. Theodore Roosevelt became President when William McKinley was assassinated; then was elected to full term. Did not seek re-election. Four years after leaving office, ran again and lost.
6. Calvin Coolidge became President when Warren Harding died; then was elected to full term. Did not seek re-election.
7. Harry S. Truman became President when Franklin D. Roosevelt died; then was elected to full term. Did not seek re-election.
8. Lyndon B. Johnson became President when John F. Kennedy was assassinated; then was elected to full term. Reelected in 1964, withdrew from 1968 presidential race before convention.
9. Gerald Ford became President when Richard Nixon resigned; then lost election to full term.
John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon are the seven former vice-presidents who were later elected to a term of their own as President. Roosevelt, Coolidge,Truman and Johnson ran as incumbent Presidents.
Vice Presidents who were also elected President are:
* These Presidents were elected to the office of Vice President only and inherited the Presidency at the death of the President.
** The only President of the United States who was never elected President or Vice-President. Ford was appointed to the Vice Presidency under the 25th Amendment after the resignation of VP Nelson Rockefeller, and assumed the Presidency upon the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
There have been way more than two vice presidents that were elected president right after their vice presidential term. The first was John Adams, who was also the first vice president. The second was Thomas Jefferson, who was also the second vice president. The third was Martin Van Buren, who was Andrew Jackson's vice president, and then was elected president right after his vice presidential term. There are many more (including George Bush).
The electoral college
1
In the United States, Vice Presidents are indirectly elected through the Electoral College. This college is composed of electors that select the President and Vice President. Ballots are cast for the electors by voters in each state and the District of Columbia.
President ford.he is the only one.
Nine
Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected with different vice presidents.
Gerald Ford. Richard Nixon chose Ford as his Vice President after the resignation of Spiro T. Agnew. Ford then became President upon Nixon's resignation. The other vice-presidents who assumed the Presidency were elected as vice-presidents.
The president who was not inaugurated and only took an oath on his residence was President John Tyler. This was after the death of President William Henry Harrison a month after his inauguration.
Both were vice-presidents who became president when the elected president died in office.
John Tyler, Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, and Chester Arthur were vice-presidents who moved up to president when the president died. In those days, a vacant vice-presidency was not filled until the next presidential election, so these men had no vice-president and were not re-elected as president so they never had a vice-president. ( Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge ,Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson also moved up to president from vice-president and so lacked a vice-president for their first term, but all were elected to a second term and had a vice-president then. )Nowaday there is a process for getting a new vice-president if the President dies.
Certainly! There are many Vice-Presidents that have served as President, both because of the death of a president and because they were elected.
