In the period of British India (until 1947), the area now known as Bangladesh was one part of the area called Bengal. Modern West Bengal and Assam (both part of modern India) were also parts of the region of Bengal under British rule. Bengal was briefly divided into West Bengal and East Bengal & Assam beginning in 1905, but this was unsuccessful and was abandoned after seven years.
When India was partitioned in 1947, East Bengal was separated from West Bengal roughly along religious lines. East Bengal soon became East Pakistan, and after a bloody war for independence from West Pakistan (now Pakistan), the nation of Bangladesh was formed in 1971.
