Germany was known as the "Holy Roman Empire", comprised of many small principalities, each of which had a strong sense of individualism. During the 16th century the Holy Roman Empire was beginning to fall apart quickly due to religious tensions caused by Martin Luther buring the Reformation.
The 16th century was revolutionary in warfare, having gunpowder becomming the staple of each European army. Mercenaries where becomming more common and in Germany, Landschnekt infantry units from modernday Switzerland and parts of Swabia where used to great extent. The Landschnekt used pikes, halberds, various swords including the zweihänder their trademark weapon and handguns. The armies of Germany at this time can be said to have revived the Greek Phalanx for a short period.
