Spain, Cortez's home, was in Europe, and Europe was the world center of cultural superiority. Everybody believed that Europe was better then everyone else, and the Spaniards carried this with them when they invaded the Americas. Cortez was no exception, he believed that it was his devine right to bring his religion to the "heathen barbarians". He was most likely a patriot, his recordings always speak of Spanish gain first, and then his own.
