People lived under a total caste environment, the lower castes were slves to the upper castes, that kept control by being born into power. The Indian people were actually much better off after the British stopped wife burning and other barbaric practices. India was given a railway system, that connected the country.

It was a cluster of numerous kingdoms which were very often trying to get foot-hold on their neighbouring kingdoms and expand.

Many of these kingdoms enjoyed rich trade with the west and west Asia and were rich but were not stable enough to survive any external attack.

Even before british Imperialism Portugese, Dutch and the French had settlements in important ports and commanded power in those areas.

Indian kings in their greed joined hands with their foreign trade partners not foreseeing what was to come.

The kings took help of the foreign forces to repeatedly fight each other which weakened the Indian kings and made the foreigners more aware the mights and weaknesses of the Indian kings.
