Norway was invaded by the Nazi Germans. The Nazis wanted to block the passageway into the North Sea. Norway's ports were ideal for that. They also needed the Natural Resources located in the mountains near the town of Narvik located on the western coast of Norway. They occupied Norway until the end of the war. The Norwegians did run an underground network to sabotage the Nazis. They also helped Jews to escape into Sweden which was a neutral nation that accepted the evading or rather escaping Jews. They also helped down airmen get to Sweden when they managed to survive. The Norwegians did their best to cope and to fight covertly.
During World War II, Norway's role was initially a 'noncombatant' one. That is, while engaging in trade with combatant nations, it sought to remain neutral. From the spring of 1940 until the end of the war, however, it was an 'occupied' nation, having been seized by German forces and then held for its strategic importance.
