It was the arrestof two Confederate envoys on their way Europe in November 1861.
A US Navy ship fired across the bows of the British mail-steamer 'Trent', in which they were travelling, and boarded the vessel to make the arrest.
The British were outraged, and threatened war with the Union. Several of Lincoln's cabinet were ready to take up the challenge, but Lincoln managed to talk them out of it - an example of his skill at handling difficult people.
Curiously, the situation was partially defused by Prince Albert on his death-bedat Windsor. He asked to see the telegram that the Foreign Office was due to send to Washington, and decided to tone-down the language a little. This is believed to have provided Lincoln's team with 'a ladder to climb down'.

The Trent Affair. The Confederate warship CSS Nashville transferred two Confederate dimplomats and their staff to the Trent, a British mail packet en route to England. Later the Trent was stopped and boarded by the Union warship USS San Jacinto, and the Confederates were arrested.
