Communists were dropped from the French and Italian governments and the Soviets reciprocated by securing Communist Party rule in Hungary and Bulgaria. Spain became a kingdom again, but without a king until 1975. Biting cold gave way to a summer of drought in eastern Europe. Christian Dior unveiled the "New Look", restoring French pre-eminence in fashion after years of austerity. The British stuck with austerity but nationalised their coal mines a few weeks before the snow stopped anyone getting to the coal mines.
