The Coercive Acts which were called The "Intolerable Acts." by the colonists. The first: Boston Port bill, closed the port of Boston, Administration of Justice Act, The Massachusetts Government Act, Quartering Act, The Quebec Act.
The Boston Tea Party was a protest of the lowering of the cost of the British tea by the government and the East India tea company who had gotten a bail out from the crown in 1773. The smugglers in the colonies found the Dutch tea that they sold was higher in price than the British tea, so they staged the Boston Tea Party and others in harbors in the colonies ( Hamilton was one of the largest smugglers in the colonies and a founding member of the Son's of Liberty). The cost of tea also went as far back as the Navigation Acts and the restricting of trade to and from the colonies passed from 1650-1733. Tea was also taxed in 1767 in the Townsend Acts.
In response to the Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament passed the "Coercive Acts", also known as the "Intolerable Acts", in 1774. There were actually five laws, but only four of them were related to the Boston Tea Party:The Boston Port Act closed the port of Boston until the East India Tea Company was repaid for the destroyed cargo. The Massachusetts Government Act dictated that virtually all positions in the colonial government would be appointed by the governor or the King, eliminating many elected offices. The Administration of Justice Act gave the governor the power to move trials of government officials to another colony if he thought they could not get a fair trial in Massachusetts. The Quartering Act allowed the governors of all the colonies the power to house soldiers in unoccupied buildings, without the consent of the owners. To the best of my knowledge, the East India Tea Company was never repaid.
The Intolerable Acts= ~Coercive Acts and Quebec Acts ~Restricted Democracy ~Closed Boston Harbor ~Established Roman Catholicism as the official religion in Quebec ~British sent 4000 or more soldiers into Boston - to suppress uprisings ~Goal of intolerable acts were: -punish the colonists -specifically Massachusetts -wanted colonists to submit to authority.
