In the Union army each regiment was assigned two surgeons and each corps received a small fleet of two wheeled ambulances. Wounded soldiers were also carried to safety on stretchers and mule litters. Normal procedure was to treat wounds as well as illnesses as soon as possible. More serious medical problems were treated in temporarily built field hospitals. Additionally, there were small first aid stations near battlefields. The Union made use of nearby churches, schools and farmhouses.

Medical care in the middle of the 19th Century was not advanced under peacetime conditions.

In the midst of the civil war, it was horrible worse, however, doctors able to perform field duty were scarce. The result was a high Death Rate for wounded men. This was not only due to battle wounds, but from disease & infections.

It has been estimated that disease killed 2 soldiers for every one who died from a combat wound.
