Indian allies of George III were busy and were paid bounties for American scalps. 1777 was known as "the bloody year" on the frontier, yet the tide moving west did not stop. In the Illinois country British troops were vulnerable to attack because they had scattered posts which they had captured from the French. George Rodger Clark came up with the idea of seizing these forts by surprise and floated down the Ohio River with 175 men capturing the forts.
