Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is most known for his policy of "appeasement" toward Adolf Hitler's Germany. It is thought that his appeasement policy was for Britain to be seen as being fair to German concerns and to keep Europe from going into war. It is also thought that Chamberlain thought war was inevitable and used the policy to gain time in order to build up Britain's military position.

Chamberlain also declared war on Germany in 1939 after Germany attacked Poland. Britain and France had previously agreed to protect Poland.
Chamberlain was also known for his efforts towards improving the lives of workers. He supported the Holiday Pay Act which gave workers one week off with pay and the Factories Act of 1937 which limited the number of hours women and children worked.

It was Neville Chamberlain, not Seville, although he was SIR Neville, which might have confused his name! He is known best for his attempts to reach a diplomatic settlement with Nazi Germany regarding it's expansionist aims, which resulted in the failed Munich Agreement of 1938, in which Chamberlain offered a guarantee of British peace with Hitler on the proviso that the Nazi Government did not invade or occupy any more countries than it already had. It lead to Chamberlain's comment that 'we have peace in our time' after landing at London Airport upon his return from the summit meeting. However, the following year, Germany went on to break the agreement and to invade Poland, prompting Chamberlain to issue an ultimatum to Hitler to either withdraw or face Britain declaring war on Germany. The ultimatum was ignored, and war was duly declared on 3rd September 1939. Britain was ill-prepared for the conflict at the time- it had nowhere near the size of standing army required to match the Nazi war-machine, and although it's naval strength was reasonable, it's air force was outdated with the sole exception of the Hurricane fighter and the Wellington bomber- the Spitfire was still under development, and much of Britain's fighter force was still reliant upon biplanes such as the Fairey Swordfish and the Gloster Gladiator (although these were still pretty good fighters nonetheless). The period of time between the Munich Summit and the official declaration of war is known as the 'phoney war', in that most political commentators and analysts knew that it was only a matter of time before Hitler broke the pact and that war was inevitable. When Hitler invaded France in early 1940, Chamberlain is also remembered for having dispatched a British Expeditionary Force of 150,000 troops to go to France's aid- this failed to repel the German advance, and resulted in the Britain's humiliating retreat from Dunkirk, where tens of thousands of British and French troops had to undergo emergency evacuation. Thousands of British naval vessels, commercial ships and even small privately owned fishing boats and yachts were commandeered to assist in the evacuation- by then the Spitfire had been rushed into production and the UK had embarked upon a heavy armament programme, which enabled the Nazi's to be kept at bay both by sea bombardment and air power up to an extent. Nonetheless, many thousands of British troops lost their lives, or were captured by the Nazi's and sent either to POW camps or summarily executed. It also resulted in tensions between the British and French Governments, as Britain gave priority to evacuating her own troops and the French did not feel that it had done enough to get more retreating French forces out of the country, leaving them to Hitler's mercy. In the wake of the Dunkirk catastrophe, Chamberlain resigned in June 1940 to be replaced by Winston Churchill. The following month saw the beginning of the Battle of Britain, which lasted until October and was crucial in determining whether Hitler decided to launch an air and seaborne invasion of the country- fortunately it was won by the British, forcing Hitler to reassess British military might and to cancel 'Operation Sealion', his plan for the invasion of the British mainland. But he then switched to the mass indiscriminate bombing of British cities, in an attempt to wear down public morale. The USA supported Britain both financially and with military equipment, but did not enter the war directly until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour the following year- however, Britain did have the support of it's dominion and Empire nations, including Canda, Australia, India and New Zealand, which did a lot to make up the deficit.

Great Britain's leader during World War 2 was?

Neville Chamberlain was the Conservative Prime Minister from May 1937 to May 1940. Chamberlain threatened to resign unless the Labour Party was willing to join his Government. Labour decided not to serve under Chamberlain (though willing to serve under someone else) and so Chamberlain went on to Buckingham Palace to resign and he advised the King to send for Churchill. And so Churchill became Prime Minister and has been known as a British icon and Leader during the Second World war. Hope that somewhat helped!
