∙ 14y agoThe Navigation Act of 1696 gave colonial customs officials the power to seize unlawfully shipped goods. Also, merchants accused of smuggling were to be tried in special colonial courts without juries. This was because colonial juries tended to be sympathetic to such lawbreaking.

From the beginning of his reign, Charles II of England felt it necessary to regulate colonial trade. To create economic unity within the empire, he reenacted a law that excluded foreign vessels from trading with the English colonies.
This sort of regulation is called a navigation act. It was designed to make the colonies and parent country dependent on each other, without foreign interference.
