The Battle of Chancellorsville fought from May 1-4 of 1863 generally receives this dubious honor. About 133,868 Union troops under the command of Joseph Hooker had 17,278 casualties. Robert E. Lee had only 60,892 troops and a casualty count of 12,821. By way of comparison the total casualties at Gettysburg in Pennsylvania was 51,112, and lasted for three days. The one day battle at Antietam near Sharpsburg, Maryland involved less troops but had 12,401 Union and 10,316 Confederate casualties. The most lopsided battle was at Cold Harbor, Virginia when Grant had 13,000 casualties compared to Lee's 2,500 in a 13 day battle.
