The incident touched off a year long boycott of the bus system by the Black citizens of Montgomery. This created a lot of hardship for them because many of them had no cars and their only means of getting to work, school, and shopping was by bus. In December 1956 the Supreme Court declared Alabama's bus segregation laws unconstitutional.
