This question probably deserves more attention than can be given in a paragraph or two but, essentially, the "cold war" was a test of nerves between the United States and its allies, and the Soviet Union and its allies, following the end of the second world war.
Keeping in mind that the USA and the USSR were allies during the war years, the two had distinctly different ideologies, and engaged in a 50-year post-war "who blinks first" competition for superpower supremacy.
The end of this enormous waste of time was effected more by the efforts of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev than anyone on our side of the fence, although Ronald Reagan, as US president at the time (1995), most certainly did everything possible to limit the production of nuclear weapons and to allow other countries to decide for themselves whether they chose to be communist or capitalist - a difficult bit of undoing considering the track records of his war-mongering predecessors.
The fact that Mr. Gorbachev and Mr. Reagan were both intelligent enough to see the ridiculousness of "the cold war" made for a more peaceful and productive situation for both sides.
The cold war ended happily for the US while Reagan was President.
Most historical critics will agree that Ronald Reagan was the best president who had the most success during the Cold War.
