Every able bodied (healthy) US male between the ages of 18 or (19) and 26 (depending upon the needs of the service) had to register for the draft. After registering, and upon receiving notice to report for induction in the military, you had to report. You were medically inspected, mentally tested (written test), then sent to basic training (boot camp). After boot camp, you were sent to advanced training in your assigned military duty (truck driver, tank crewman, artilleryman, infantryman, military policeman, clerk, medic, mechanic, aircraft repairman, engineer, radar operator, radio operator, etc.). After completing all of that, you were sent to your duty station; which could be in Korea, Germany (Europe), Alaska, anywhere in the US, or the Republic of South Vietnam.
The Draft was when the Army looked at a list of Adults and with a checklist. The process basically went like this. "OK, lets see ok 18 year old CHECK good physical condition CHECK ok get him" theyd send Army officers to pick you up. You had absoulutely no joice but to go even if they had to knock you out cold. The Morman Battalion of about 600 men, was "somewhat" drafted during the Mexican War of 1846, when they marched from Utah to Southern California...the US's LONGEST march in history. "Somewhat" meaning that they were "asked" and "...told that they could keep their government issued muskets and accompanying field gear, in gratitude for their service...", but there was a veiled consequence if the Mormans hadn't "volunteered."
The US Civil War of 1861 was the US's first nation wide military draft. WWI, WWII, Korea, with the last draft being Vietnam. All of those wars also had "draft induced" volunteers. Meaning, the men volunteered because they knew they were going to be conscripted anyway...and at least by "volunteering" they had more options of staying alive (out of the trenches, as it was called all the way up to Vietnam).
The US Frontier Wars (Indian Wars); Spanish-American War of 1898 (a six month declared war); Boxer Rebellion; Philippine Insurrection (incorrectly labeled the Philippine War); Operations Urgent Fury (Grenada); Just Cause (Panama); Desert Storm (Iraq); Restore Hope (Somalia); Iraqi Freedom (Iraq); and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) have all been conducted by a volunteer US military.
