During this period, Spain was growing extremely wealthy because of their expanding American Empire. Gold and Silver flooded back to Spain in such quantities that it caused a depression, but the trade fleets also carried food, luxury items (including, for the first time in Europe, Chocolate) and raw materials such as Cotton. The wealth of Spain enabled the Spanish kings to wage a series of European wars, resulting with them having widespread territories in the Netherlands and Italy by the end of the 17th Century. These European possessions added more wealth to Spain. On the other hand, poverty was still widespread amongst the lower classes.
