Whether it be the U.S. or Canada there would be no documentation when immigrants first came to prove when the first school was built because many wilderness towns started their own small schools (crude, but enough to teach children.)

The first college in North America was Harvard College. This college was established in 1636 and named after it's first benefactor, Minister John Harvard of Charlestown

Key notes:

1653 John Sassamon, a Massachusetts Indian, became the first Native American to study at Harvard.

1780 The Massachusetts Constitution went into effect and recognized Harvard as a University.

Note: a University encompasses different colleges or schools that are separate entities unlike a college where there is one school with separate departments.

The oldest American school was Boston Latin School founded in 1635. But there were private or home schools before then. Massachusetts passed the "Deluder Satan Act", which required that towns of a certain size hire a schoolmaster to teach local children in 1642.
