England is part of Great Britain, the ninth largest island in the world, which comprises mainland England, mainland Wales (to the West) and mainland Scotland (to the North). Globally, England is in North West Europe, just off the North of France. The climate is temperate. Characterised by depressions, there is quite a bit of rainfall. Temperatures can range between -5 and 30 degrees celcius. Within England, there are several interesting geographical features. The Pennines is a range of mountains in the North of England. Buxton is the highest market town in England, and is located in the Pennines. The Peak District National Park is in the Pennines. Despite these mountains, the UK does not lie near or on a fault line, so there are seldom any earthquakes. When they do occur, they are mild. The three longest rivers in England are the Severn (220 miles - also flows through part of Wales), the Thames (215 miles - flows through London) and the Trent (185 miles - flows through Nottingham and Derby). England's geology is varied, and Cheddard Gorge, the White Cliffs of Dover (chalk) and The Jurassic Coast and particularly interesting features. England is divided into 48 counties, and of these The City of London, Devon and Cornwall are probably the best known as they attract many tourists. London, the capital city, is in the South-East of England and in 2007 Greater London had a population of 7.5 million. Other major cities include Bristol, in the South West, where Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge is; York (which Richard II wanted to make the capital of England), in the North; Manchester, which is to the North West; and Birmingham, South of Manchester and North of Bristol, but also to the West.
