Firstly, it wasn't to prove the world was round. The world was already proven to be round before his journey.

The initial reason was to find the shortest westwards route to the spice islands (In Indonesia, Maluku Islands now I think) but he had been given information of a passageway, below South America

and he had found that travelling through this passage it was possible to continue sailing westwards home.

In simple terms, the journey was based around trade and new land discovery

Magellan wanted to reach the Spice Islands in the Orient (the original aim of Columbus) by sailing the rest of the way westward around the world, which meant crossing the unknown waters of the Pacific Ocean (which he named). Although Portuguese, he sailed for the Spanish after being refused by his own king.

Although some of his crew successfully returned to Spain, Magellan was killed in a battle with Polynesian natives and all but one of his five ships were lost.

Several years before his long voyage, Magellan had sailed east around Africa to reach India and the Malay Archipelago. His eastward and westward voyages made him the first person to reach the Indies (Indonesia) from both directions.
