The Communist Party, officially known as the Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA), was founded in 1919 in the aftermath of Russia's Bolshevik Revolution. The existing Socialist Party had split into factions when the more radical Bolsheviks broke away to form the Communist Party of America and the Communist Labor Party. The Communist Party opposed the gradualist, democratic methods of the socialists and advocated proletarian revolution and Marxist orthodoxy. Most of its members were recent immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe who had little understanding of the political realities of the United States. The Communist Labor Party emphasized the need for a broad-based popular movement that would achieve power by gradual means. In 1921, the Communist International, or Comintern, ordered the two parties to unite and follow international communist policy dictated by the Soviet Union. Following a period of factional fighting, during which the group was first named the United Communist Party and later the Workers (Communist) Party, the party finally became the CPUSA in 1929.

A committee in the House of Representatives that was intended to expose/counter communist subversion in the United States.

The House Committee on Un-American Activities, also called HUAC, began in 1938 as part of a second "Red Scare" in the United States. It led to an anti-communist crusade to investigate subversive and un-American Propaganda. The Committee also targeted University professors and strongly urged, threatened, them to cut objectionable material out of courses. It lost a great deal of credibility after attempting to charge film stars, most notably 8-year-old Shirley temple, with being communists.

In 1948, ten Hollywood writers and directors were charged with contempt of Congress for failing to answer questions by the committee. They were jailed for a year in 1950, and "blacklisted" by the studios, who sought to avoid Congressional interference in the entertainment industry.
