What was the main reason for the Morse code?

In the nineteenth century, Samuel Morse discovered that by turning by turning a switch (at the transmitter site) current flow through the wires would make a sound at the receive site. The receive site could be several sites and they did not have to be close together.

The upshot was that a clicking sound in London England could be repeated in St John's Newfoundland with no appreciable time lapse (at least in the nineteenth century) This was deemed a significant improvement over snail mail. Snail Mail at the time was both expensive and slow (at least days, possibly weeks or months). Hence the term "snail". [The term 'snail mail' dates from the development of the internet]

Morse Code was a means of transmitting data over a channel permitting only two states- on and off. All Morse Code characters are made up of pulses either short or long, the arrangement of short and long pulses conveys the requisite character.
