The French built Charleville musket was the most common infantry weapon but would have to take a back seat in terms of effectiveness to the American made long rifle. This weapon goes by the name of Pennsylvania rifle, Kentucky Rifle and Tennessee or hog rifle and each is only a slight variation of the basic weapon. Why was it effective? It was accurate out to a range of 300 yards against a human size target. That is three times the distance that can be had with the Charleville or the Brown Bess. The problem exists also of the unit cost which would have been at least three times what a trade musket would sell for. Rifles take about twice the time to load as the musket so you are putting less lead down range, but in the hands of an expert, it is effective fire and you are reaching that target goal of one shot - one kill.
Accuarcy has a bonus in terms of target selection because instead of the assurance that this shot really counts, the well qualified rifleman can select the best available target to engage such as leadership which is why Snipers evolved.
A second important advantage is that the rifleman can engage his enemy while he is still far enough away to be effectively fired on. This stand off capability leads to fewer casualties for the good guys which is always a plus in combat.
Or:
It can be given a legitimate argument that the bayonet was the most effective weapon of the American Revolution (Or any war since.) Few weapons exist that can break an enemy force more effectively then a determined bayonet charge. It implies certain death and lethal commitment. It becomes a kill or be killed moment. After all, All Wars are Won by the Threat of the Bayonet.
The most powerful weapon was the cannon. If you mean what was the most accurate weapon, than the rifle was. Hardly any soldier in America would be able to afford a rifle. Muskets (called fire-locks back then) were much cheaper and used more often than a rifle. Muskets were powerful, but very inaccurate. Same thing with the cannons. There's a small chance you'll hit someone with it.
The musket, bayonet, and pistol. I recommend this website for further information. Just copy and paste.
