At the time of the first major battle of the US Civil War, it was called by two names based on what side of the conflict named the battle. Southerners named battles on land sites, while in the North, they named battles based on nearby waterways, if one existed. And, the victors of a war, are the ones with the first shot to write "history". With that said, the battle was named the Battle of Bull Run. A nearby stream had that name. The date was July 1, 1861. The land site was Manassas. Therefore the Southerners could and probably did so at that point in time . As an aside, major it was, for when the battle occurred, history shows that the combined battle forces were the largest ever in North America. Perhaps the entire Western Hemisphere.
