The first known explorer to circumnavigate the Australian continent was Matthew Flinders. Flinders sailed around Australia in the ship The Investigator between 1801 and 1803, filling in many of the gaps left by previous explorers. Flinders was the one who first proposed the name "Australia" for the continent.

This was Matthew Flinders, who circumnavigated and charted the coastline of Australia between 1801 and 1803.
lieutenant James Cook (not yet a captain) was the one who first mapped the coasts of these countries. Although James Cook did not discover New Zealand or Australia, he was the first to explore and map both. He circumnavigated New Zealand's islands in 1769 and much of the eastern coast of Australia in 1770.
Inspired by reports from Captain Cook's journeys, and wanting to be a sea adventurer and explorer after reading "Robinson Crusoe", Flinders came to Australia initially as an 18 year old Midshipman with Captain William Bligh in the "Providence", in 1792.
Matthew Flinders is connected with Australia because he made a significant contribution to the exploration and mapping of the continent. He explored and charted the coast north and south of Sydney. Between December 1801 and June 1803, Flinders circumnavigated and charted the entire coastline of Australia, filling in the gaps of what was known about the continent. He was also the one who suggested the name Australia for the continent. Some of his exploration and discoveries were as follows:Flinders, together with Bass, proved that Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) was an island, and not connected to the mainland.Flinders explored Moreton Bay in what is Queensland's southeast, naming several points of interest. He landed at, and named, Red Cliff Point, now Redcliffe, just north of Brisbane, as well as Coochiemudlo Island. While circumnavigating Australia, Flinders spent three weeks exploring and charting King George's Sound, now Albany, in Western Australia. He discovered and named Kangaroo Island off the South Australian coast. He spent several days exploring and mapping Port Phillip Bay, where the city of Melbourne now stands.

Matthew Flinders explored for England, even though much of his valuable charting and mapping was done to further knowledge of the Australian coastline.

Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer, did not conquer any tribes during his expeditions. He is best known for being the first European to explore the coast of North America between Florida and New Brunswick in 1524. Verrazzano focused on mapping the coastline and establishing trade relations with the indigenous people he encountered.

In Flinders' main voyage of discovery which involved the circumnavigation of Australia (1801-1803), he had a number of tasks. One was to obviously complete a detailed map of the Australian coastline - especially the unmapped south coast. He also completed a more detailed mapping of the east coast and some of the northern coastline as well. One specific question to which he was asked to seek an answer was if there was a strait running north to south which divided the Australian continent. His survey of both the south and north coasts dispelled this notion. Naturally as any naval explorer he was also keeping extensive notes of useful finds - rivers, bays, mountains, good land, islands, reefs and so on.
