I know since I'm a viet Nam vet one of the nva major defenses as far as air combat was its large array of SAM missiles it is said doing the height of the war north viet Nam's Hanoi was surround by a triple battery of Sam missiles and they knew how to use them to knocking hundreds of our planes and killing or capturing thousands of airmen. as for the ground war I think the nvas strength was in the sheer number of soldiers that they were willing to deploy sometimes just to knock out or kill just a minimal amount of Americans. of all of my experiences when we never did go into combat where the number of soldiers on both sides was even usually they out man us 20 to one. also determination was one of charlies strength (nick name for nva soldiers). now you make the call here is a army that use bicycles to carry their military hard ware , had some of the most primitive weaponry in the likes of booby traps, yet they were able to fend off a super power like the us
