The historical outcome of the Normandy invasion was that German control of mainland Europe suffered its first loss. Before the Allies had landed at Normandy and established a foothold on Fortress Europe, the Germans controlled all of mainland Europe except: Spain (which was under the Pro-Nazi and Pro-Fascist regime of Francisco Franco), Switzerland (Which declared her neutrality), Italy (The Fascist State), Sweden, and Romania (Under the control of the Nazi)

The victory at Normandy was neccassary and instrumental in Germany's defeat in World War II.

After a dangerous but successful amphibious landing at Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, the Allied forces pushed into France and eventually overcame the German occupation forces. The Germans were short on supplies and fighting a losing battle against the Soviets on the Eastern Front (and had forces trapped in Italy) and could not stop the onslaught. The Germans retreated across France back into Germany, making one last counterattack at the Battle of the Bulge (December, 1944), before being finally defeated in May, 1945.

The Liberation of France & the eventual defeat of the Nazis in WW2. The breakout, Op Cobra, was particularly successful, led by Patton. It raised the question of whether Eisenhower should have attacked Germany by single thrust or broad front. Eisenhower chose Montgomerys bold plan to attack the Rhur, crossing the Rhine at Arnhem. Whether supplies could have been maintained to Patton further south is another question. It might be argued that the resurgance of the panzer forces in the Battle of the Bulge in December 44 suggests otherwise......

The Normandy Invasion was successful despite problems and obstacles. It allowed the Allies to set up a supply port and base. It freed many villages and towns. It also pushed the Germans back towards Germany. Many Germans were taken as prisoners. Those prisoners were sent to England. They worked on farms and that helped the British home front. It also boosted the morale of the Americans and Britons. Sadly, the invasion taught Hitler nothing. He lived in denial until he killed himself.
