The plan for the gradual removal of American troops from south Vietnam was called Vietnamization. South Vietnamese troops were trained to use American arms and materiel to protect their country.
President Nixon, who won re-election on a "end the war' platform, called the program "Vietnamization." This program was to expand training and weapons capabilities of South Vietnamese forces, thus allowing U.S. forces to withdraw troops. Nixon also called this "Peace with Honor."
