The Black Hand, a terrorist group from Serbia knew Franz Ferdinand was coming to their country, and they knew of his route. They had three different spots where they had a member of their group waiting for Ferdinand to come so they could kill him. At the first location, the terrorist jumped out and pulled his pistol on Franz Ferdinand, but the pistol misfired and the crowd tackled him. The second person just didn't even show up. At the third station was Gavrilo Princip and a friend. His friend threw a Molotov cocktail, but it rolled too far and went under a car behind Ferdinands. It blew up and that man was captured. Princip fled and went to a coffee shop. Ferdinand went to a friends house and enjoyed a dinner. When he was leaving he passed by the coffee shop and out comes Princip at that same time. The car was stopped, and Princip just pulled his gun and killed Ferdinand and his wife. This is the truth.

The archduke was in Sarajevo, then part of Bosnia annexed by Austria-Hungary. Ferdinand and Sophie (his wife) were attacked on the 28th of June, 1914, at approximately 10:15 am when a grenade was thrown at their car by a member of the political terrorist group, The Black Hand. The grenade was deflected by the folded top of Ferdinand's convertible and detonated far behind them.

The royal couple insisted on seeing all those who had been hospitalized. After they had visited the injured, Franz and Sophie decided to go to the palace, but Franz Ferdinand's driver took a wrong turn onto a side street where more Serbian assassins including Gavrilo Princip spotted them.

As their car was backing up, Princip approached and shot both Sophie, striking her in the abdomen, and Franz, who was struck in the jugular and was still alive when witnesses arrived to render aid. Sophie died enroute to the town hall, and Ferdinand shortly after arriving there, despite attempts at medical treatment.

Princip had used the Browning .380 ACP cartridge, a relatively low power round, and a pocket-sized FN model 1910 pistol to assassinate the Archduke and his wife. Princip and 15 others were captured and convicted. Three were hanged and Princip died of tuberculosis in prison in 1918.

He was shot by a teenage vagrant, Gavrilo Princip, an inadequate character who had been rejected by the army and several terrorist groups, and wanted to prove that he could kill.

Some of his colleagues had also tried to kill the Archduke that day. One of them had thrown a bomb, which missed, and the angry Archduke told his aide to change the route. But the message did not reach the chauffeur, and in the confusion, the car stalled on a street-corner. Princip saw his chance, and shot the Archduke and Archduchess, who died within the hour.
