Originally to bail out Italy, they had become bogged down in that region. A new second mission was to gain control of the Suez Canal for future strategical reasons; Japan would soon be advancing westward through India; until stopped by the British and Merrill's Marauders.

During World War II, Germany sent troops to North Africa at numerous different points. Initially, the intent was to assist the Italian forces operating against Allied units near the Libya/Egypt border. Later, the intent was to drive back the Allied armies that had landed in French-occupied North Africa.

the germans invaded North Africa becuase they badly needed fuel for theri armoured divisions after the assualt on France and the lower countries in Europe. North africa was full of oil and was an appropriet area to atttack becuase it was lightly defended by the british until reinforcement by other british forces.

Italy invaded North Africa first to grab territory. Then when England started defeating Italian soldiers in North Africa, Germany stepped in to help it's Axis partner.
