During World War II, the purpose of Operation Torch was to liberate North Africa from Axis occupation and, thus, to pave the way for invasions of mainland Europe. This operation was, in fact, successful, although it was not until early 1943 that the African coast was Axis-free and operations against Italy's home territories could commence.
Operation Husky
Great Britain, germany, france, italy, spain, Portugal, and Belgium
It was the landing of British & American forces in French North Africa. It would lead to the Invasion of Italy. As Churchill described it the soft underbelly of Europe.
The cause of Operation Husky was to reclaim Sicily from Italy and Nazi Germany. Operation Husky was a large scale amphibious and airborne operation, followed by six weeks of land combat.
As far as i know the code name was confidential or was not present but it is often called the Salerno D-Day
Operation Husky was actually the invasion of Sicily and not Italy. The invasion of mainland Italy was code named Operation Avalanche. As for why operations have the names they do - well, the idea is that the code name should have no connection whatsoever to the operation. Basically, if you can see any connection between the name and the operation it is likely that your enemy's intelligence service will also see the connection and work out what you plan to do. - I Warner
The Allies defeated Axis forces in North Africa, which set up the successful Allied invasion of Italy.
Torch was the code Name given to the invasion of Algeria region in French north Africa carried out in November 1942 by the Allied forces in order to take from the back the Axis Army that was fighting in Libya against the British Army led by Montgomery. The invasion was counterbalanced by the Axis army which managed to invade Tunisia, thus prolonging the war in North Africa until May 1943. Operation Torch was the British American invasion of French north Africa during the north African campaign of the second world war. Initially it was called as Operation Gymnast.
They planned and carried out the invasion of Sicily, followed by the invasion of Italy.
The Third Front was North Africa and Italy. North Africa was Hitlers plain on him thinking would be the fastest was to Israel (at the time Palestine) and it was just a waste of money for him because he really didn't get any where Italy already had a colony in (Modern Day Libya) and they got to Egypt and lost to the British. Then once the British and Americans kicked them out of N. Africa. Operation Husky (The invasion of Sicily) began
