Probably the reasons were different for each person.
Each generation has styles and fads. Wearing clothing and hairstyles in the trend at the time resulted in a look that is now known as "hippie". It was free and unrestricted, like a society that the group most associated with and sought.
Failure of the established culture to live up to expectations caused a "dropping out" by many from all the past societal icons and fashion, since it represented that which got our world to the brink of destruction with soldiers dying daily on TV in the Vietnamese war.
Appreciation of art and music of the day, much of which was anti-establishment.
Rebellion. Counter culture. Disestablishmentarianism.
Wanting to identify with the group that represented change, love, nature, ecology, peace, anti-war, and natural living. To be a part of the good and reject the bad of war, hate, crime, bigotry, poverty and greed which were considered the root of the evil of the establishment at the time.
The drug culture was separate but many participants in one group, also participated in the other. This was possibly as another method of rebellion and possibly as self-medication to avoid the agony of the war, death, and destruction.
Listen to the music of the day and you will learn very much about the culture and what attracted people to it at the time.
