A very involved topic: Germany - Mainly entered war in order to secure the nation from hostile, militaristic neighbors and regain prestige lost in WW1. Battles in Russia were mainly fought to control oil, food and other resources so that Germany would be able to fight a prolonged war despite Allied blockade. Other German attacks such as against France, Norway, etc. were to defeat those nations military potential and give the German homeland some security. France - Attacked by Germany in 1940 after France declared war on Germany due to German attack on Poland. Britain - Churchill had a personal hatred of Hitler and other Germans. English people fought the war in order that one nation would not dominate the continent of Europe. Britain has alway fought for this issue whether it be again Spain, Napoleon, or Hitler. Russia - Russian lust for control of eastern Europe is legendary. Technically they entered the war defensively after being attacked by Germany and other Axis nations. Probably conflict was unavoidable since Russia was expansionist towards the west. Italy - Foolishly led nation, ill prepared for war. Deluded thoughts of re-establishing some sort of Roman Empire in the Mediterranean. Glory and conquest. USA - Pres. Roosevelt wanted USA in war to help British. American people desired to stay out of foreign conflicts. Ultimately Pearl Harbor attack by Japanese settled the issue and unified the USA people behind their already beligerant president. Japan - Imperial conquest, domination of areas surrounding Japan home islands. These goals were similar to the goals of Germany - to control and area large enough to give the homeland some military and economic security. As a side issue, the Japanese had a desire to expel European colonial powers from East Asia - these being the Dutch, English, French plus the Americans.

For the same reason as a mathematical equation. The word equation is derived from EQUAL - so to be equal or balanced there has to be the same number of atoms on each side.
