In ancient times, most Persians were Zoroastrians. The prophet Zoroaster founded this religion in Persia probably some time before the 6th century BCE. Zoroaster taught that the Creator, Ahura Mazda, is all good, but is in a constant battle to maintain his creations against evil (druj), which tries to destroy them.
In the 7th century, Islam spread over Persia. It is the dominant religion of Iran today, with Shi'ites more numerous than Sunnis. There are still some practicing Zoroastrians, as well as a small number of Christians, Jews, and people who practice the Bahá'í faith, another religion which originated in Persia, about 150 years ago.
