Initially, the Arabs were made up of a bunch of different religious groups, among them were Jews, Christians, Hubalists, Rahmanists, and several varieties of henotheists and polytheists. When Islam became the dominant Arab religion during Mohammed's lifetime, the Arab traders became mostly Muslim.

However, there remained a small minority of Jewish traders who helped coordinate trade between Christian Europeans and the Arabs due to Christian-Muslim antagonism.
