As the first day of battle at Shiloh, ( Pitssburg Landing) was coming to a close, Union forces under General Prentiss, made a remarkable stand that halted the Confederate advance for several crucial hours. After eleven Rebel assaults on the "Nest", the Confederates amassed 62 artillery pieces and blasted the stubborn Union forces into a retreat.
