The special force (the mobile killing units) were called Einsatzgruppen.

There were four of these groups at the start of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, each with about 500-700 men, but they recruited local volunteers to help them with the killings. For example, they recruited over 30,000 enthusiastic local volunteers in Lithuania.

The Gestapo was the special strike force that rounded up and killed the Jews. However, they didn't just kill Jews. The Gestapo was divided into 5 departments.

Department A was instructed to kill: Communists, institute Counter Sabotage, and kill Reactionaries and Liberals, and conduct assassinations.

Department B was instructed to kill: Catholics, Protestants, Freemasons, and Jews.

Department C was the central administrative office of the Gestapo, responsible for card files of all personnel including all officials.

Department D was a repeat of departments A and B for use outside the Reich, in occupied territories.

Department E was in charge of counter-intelligence: within the Reich, in Policy Formation, in the West, in Scandinavia, in the East, and in the South.
