Il Duce ("The Leader") .
Assuming you are referring to WWII, the Allied nations fought the Axis nations, who at the beginning of the war were Germany, Italy, and Japan. Italy was eventually turned into an ally of the US and UK once Mussolini was taken out of power.
Italy's fascist regime made considerable efforts to colonize parts of Africa. By 1936, led by Benito Mussolini, Italy had invaded Libya and Ethiopia.
He wanted to re-establish the Roman Empire. The name of his movement -- Fascism -- was taken from the Roman fasces carried by magistrates as a mark of their authority. The fasces was a bundle of rods bound around an axe.
He allied with Hitler during WW 2 and caused Italy to be taken over by the Americans and British. He was also responsible for all the precious art that was in Italy that the allies destroyed (not on purpose) as they moved through Italy.
Mussolini, his girlfriend, and a few close associates were captured and executed in the village of Dongo in northern Italy, very close to the border with Switzerland. They were trying to flee to avoid being captured by the Allied forces.
Benito Mussolini was born on July 29, 1883
Mussolini signed a pact with Hitler to be an ally. He did NOT think of it as he was following after Hitler. Both countries had a form of fascist government. For a long time, before the war and a year into the war, the two Dictators were equal in many ways in their actions and egotism. Mussolini came to power in 1922, many years before Hitler did in 1933. In June 1934, Hitler traveled to Italy to visit Mussolini. Hitler, dressed in civilian clothes, was dazzled by Mussolini who wore a splendid uniform and showed off his air and sea power. This inspired Hitler to begin wearing his uniform and visor cap. Even the Nazi stiff-arm salute was taken from Mussolini and his Blackshirts. Mussolini was fluent in German but it seems that every time they met, Hitler would take control of the conversation. So, in a sense, Mussolini did relent control to Hitler. By 1941, Italy had fought several years in North Africa and was tired of war. Their Army was worn out and needed new equipment. That made Mussolini "look up" to Hitler for aide. In 1943. Actually, Mussolini was captured twice, once in 1943, and his fatal capture in 1945. After the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, the Italian King Victor Emmanuel II took power, and General Pietro Bodaglio replaced Mussolini who was then imprisoned. He was contemplating suicide when rescued in 1944 by German paratroopers led by SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny, and reinstated as Il Duce in Milan by Hitler. Even after the Allies captured Rome, Mussolini continued to rule a Fascist government-in-exile until the Allies closed on Milan. He then fled north to Germany but was captured by Communist Italians and executed.
After Sicily was attacked by the Allies, it was obvious that Italy was going to be next. By then, much of the Italian Army was either killed or taken prisoner, and an Allied invasion could not be repulsed. Therefore, Mussolini was overthrown and Italy entered into negotiations for surrender. The German Army quickly moved to occupy Italy and prepare for the forthcoming Allied invasion.
Yes, she was, but not quite in the way you are thinking. Clara Petacci was with Mussolini in a country hotel in northern Italy. They were caught by a group of partisans, who shot them both dead. They were then taken to Milan, the second city of Italy. After their heels had been tied together, they were strung up from a lamp-post, side by side and upside down. Mussolini did not have plans to leave Italy but instead he retreated to northern Italy. However as the partisans became more threatening, he began to flee. His mistress wanted to join him so she and her brother, Marcello, following after him. When the German convoy was stopped by the Partisans, the German leader told Mussolini to disguise himself in a German overcoat and helmet. The other Italians were not allowed to go. That was when Mussolini was captured. Later Marcello and Clara were captured but no one recognized Clara. Finally she asked to be re-united with Mussolini, which sealed her fate. At first, the partisans mistakenly thought her brother, Marcello, was Vittorio Mussolini, the son of Il Duce. The Communist Partisans gathered 15 prisoners for execution at Dongo. Marcello Petacci was shot while trying to escape this execution by jumping into Lake Como.
